Each of our open water courses is limited to a small group of 12 swimmers and two coaches, so you can benefit from regular personalized feedback each session. And they’re designed to adapt to your needs, so you never feel out of your depth.

In addition to one-on-one feedback and advice, we provide:

  • online practice guides
  • reference videos for the skills we teach

2018 Spring and Summer Seasons 

We offer two Seasons of Open Water Swimming:

 

Spring: May 14th – June 25th (Jericho Beach, Dundarave Beach)

Summer: July 3rd – August 20th (Jericho Beach, Bowen Island)

 

Level 1 – Open Water Comfort

 

“Learn How to Swim Well and Find Your 

Deep Water Confidence Step-by-Step.”

Start here if you have never tried open water swimming before. If you are anxious or feel like you’d have to take it one step at a time, or just want to learn at an easy pace, this is the best place to start.

We’ll start with short swims, easy skills and help you make the ocean feel like a second home.

You don’t need to have any interest in racing or triathlon, this is a course for recreational swimmers, or for anyone curious about a first step in open water.  This course is offered when the ocean and weather are the warmest.

Experience: No previous open water swimming experience necessary.

“Learn to Be Comfortable in Open Water This Summer!” 

 

Sea Hiker - Creature from the Black Lagoon

This is a great place to start if even the thought of open water swimming makes you anxious. This course is designed for swimmers and triathletes starting out in open water, but who feel comfortable in the pool swimming laps. You will learn how to breathe in choppy waters as well as sighting so you can swim with ease in the ocean.

Choose this course if you’re a new triathlete with little open water experience or want to get into swim racing.

Experience: No previous open water swimming experience necessary.

Perhaps you’re more interested in swimming smoothly and efficiently in open water – without any specific plans to get into open water swim racing or triathlon. This is the class for you: We’ll be focusing extra attention on how to relax in changing conditions, swim in small groups over longer distances, swim point-to-point confidently, and stay safe.  You don’t have to be racing to advance your skills and confidence in open water!

Experience: Some open water swimming experience.

Level 3+ – Open Water Race Skills

“Get Ready for Your Best Open Water Race Ever”

Getting ready for a triathlon or open water race?

Once you feel at ease in the water, you’ll want to develop your speed without sacrificing efficiency and hone your triathlon racing skills – this course will help you do just that. With intermediate triathletes and swimmers in mind, we’ll work in small groups on race specific and distance skills to get you ready for race day. Fitness and swimmers thinking about open water races are also welcome!

Experience: Some open water swimming experience required.

Level 4 – Endurance

“Build Open Water Endurance the Smart Way”

Designed for swimmers training specifically for Ironman and distances of 4km or more, each session will feature skill pace swims, tempo training sets, and endurance challenges.

In this course, we focus on how to adapt your stroke for faster more efficient endurance swims, smarter training strategies, and building speed from week to week.

Each course includes in-water demonstrations of key skills, instruction from your coach and a simple toolbox of drills, exercises and practice sets to have you swimming faster in open water.

Experience: You should be comfortable swimming in open water and have experience with open water or triathlon races OR open water swims of over 1km.

“Surge to a New Personal best” 

 

Sea Hiker Open Water Swimming Courses

In the Performance course, be prepared to smash through your comfort zone and access more speed and open water racing skills.

We’ll focus on beating your personal best by starting out fast and never letting up. We’ll have a lot of fun as you challenge yourself to see racing in a whole new way. Best suited for triathletes and open water swimmers with intermediate experience or higher.

Experience: You should be comfortable swimming in open water, have open water experience, swim at a pace of 1:58 per 100m or faster in the pool for a swim longer than 400m, and be able to swim 1km non-stop easily.
