Here are the key components of the Open Water Race Skills 6-week course:

Is this for me?

You’re relatively comfortable with pool swimming, but when it comes to triathlons you’re fairly new to everything and know that you could be more efficient with your swimming technique, racing skills, navigation, drafting and pacing. We’ll be covering this and more in the course.

You should be able to swim 200m non-stop at a relaxed pace in the pool. Swimming lengths of Kits Pool beforehand is a great way to know if you’re ready.


From Panic to Personal Best

A year ago after attempting an open water swim at a triathlon, I called Sea hiker on the advice of my friend. She assured me that Sea Hiker would be able to help me out after my most memorable panic attack in the swim the previous day. She could not have been more right. I am on my 5th class with Sea Hiker and I am so thankful for all the coaching and advice that has been offered. I have to admit that the swim is my favourite part of the race now and I prefer open water to the pool! I've even signed up for my first open water race. A year later, I returned to the same triathlon course and had great success in the swim and a personal best in my race.

You can't manage any of these challenges without confidence in the swim.

Which course should I take?

Choose Race Skills if you feel relatively comfortable swimming along the shore, around a small buoy course, but know that you could improve your stroke efficiency, racing skills, breathing, and pacing and further develop your comfort in the water.

If you have no previous experience in open water and feel quite anxious about racing, we recommend starting with Open Water Confidence. If you’re looking for an extra challenge, you might also want to take a look at our Open Water Performance course.  If you have done a triathlon before and have suffered from a panic attack, we also recommend looking at our Open Water Comfort course that is offered in the summer season.

Anxious Triathletes

Planning a much longer triathlon distance but still get panic attacks? Did your friends get you to put your name down and now you’re freakin’ out? You might want to start with an Open Water Confidence course to learn how to relax and feel comfortable in the water, first. Don’t worry, we also cover the basics of triathlon racing in that course, too.


A great course to improve confidence during the swim portion of a triathlon!!

I signed up for the open water swimming lessons because I enjoy competing in triathlons; however, I had always struggled in the swim portion and would frequently have panic attacks.

Throughout the course I became more comfortable swimming in open water and surrounded by other people. I found it especially helpful when we practiced getting splashed and bumped around by other people, as this was my biggest fear in triathlons.

At the end of the course when I did the swim portion of my triathlon I was really impressed with how comfortable I felt in the water - I actually had fun! I was surprised that it no longer bothered me when people bumped into me.

Along with gaining confidence in the water, I also got great feedback on my swimming (the videos were especially helpful) and learned a lot of new skills to practice.

Wetsuits and Gear

Wetsuits are mandatory for this course; wearing them keeps you warm, help you swim with more confidence and is a great safety tool.  Need to buy your first wetsuit? Read our blog for a simple guide to choosing one.

You may require additional thermal gear and if that’s the case – we’ll let you know. These can include: neoprene cap or hood, gloves, and neoprene socks.

Schedule and Coaches:

There will be two Sea Hiker Coaches for this course to ensure that all swimmers stay safe and can focus on learning and practicing the skills we’ll be covering. The class size is limited to 12 swimmers.

Wednesdays: 5:30 – 6:30 pm, May 16th – June 20th (6 sessions).

Sea Hiker will refund your course fees if you don’t experience a major shift in comfort, your ability to swim in open water with other swimmers, and open water swimming enjoyment.


Where to meet:

Dundarave Beach Please meet up at Dundarave Beach to the west of the main wharf (adjacent to the Beachhouse restaurant ) and be ready to swim at least 10 minutes before the start time with your wetsuit on. The Park has change rooms and bathrooms. We leave our swim bags/gear on the beach but leave your valuables at home.

Participants under 18

If you are under 18 years of age, you will need a parent or guardian to sign your liability waiver form (online). We suggest that you be at least 16 years old in order to participate in our open water courses.


Terms & Conditions

Our classes are usually in high demand and so for any cancellations later than one week prior to our class start date, we charge a $75 fee. We do not grant refunds on cancellations after the course start date. Thanks for understanding!
