Passing
If somebody taps your foot while swimming:
- do not react and stop swimming if you are still finishing your length!
- stay over to the right as much as possible.
- consider decreasing speed slightly to enable them to finish passing especially if it seems to be taking them a while.
- pause at the end of the length to let them proceed ahead of you.
- consider whether a change of group position when initiating swims will minimize the need for others to overtake you.
If passing another swimmer:
- before passing check for oncoming swimmers that may be passing, to avoid head-on collisions.
- give priority of passing to those on the returning length.
- try to position yourself from the get-go to minimize the need to overtake swimmers.
- try to swim relatively tight, to avoid banging other swimmers.
Resting
When resting:
- stay off to the left side of incoming swimmers, such that you don't impeded them from completing their swim with a touch of the wall.
- attempt to avoid resting/stopping mid-length during endurance/distance and speed sets.
- if stopping mid-length, don't stop suddenly in mid-swim, instead pulling to the side with your forward momentum and immediately looking for swimmers coming from behind and effectively minimizing your obstruction.
Changing Directions mid-Length
It is reasonable to change directions mid-length if:
- you are in drill, warm-up, or cool-down designated practices (sections of the session).
- you have an emergency (reasonable concern) of mind, emotion, body.
When changing directions:
- if stopping mid-length, don't stop suddenly in mid-swim, instead pulling to the side with your forward momentum and immediately looking for swimmers coming from behind and effectively minimizing your obstruction.
- wait until you can effectively weave between other swimmers minimizing interrupting their practices, ideally without affecting their practices.
