Here is a summary of what we have covered this week, along with what you should focus on over the weekend:

Day 1 Introduction:

Demonstration of efficient stroke and breathing without loss of balance, posture or streamline (this is the #1 goal for all swimmers)
Kicking technique
Push offs
Introduction to Streamline Drill

Day 2 Streamline Practice:

Breath control: let your body relax into the water and see how much air that gives you
Breath control: exhale slowly from the nose while floating
Review: Push-offs and add kicking
Review: Streamline posture and main components for good fundamentals:

  • Degree of body rotation
  • Head position
  • Lead arm
  • Body arm
  • Kicking

Streamline: exhale through the nose

Streamline: exhale through the nose and turn the head to air without losing your streamline posture

Discovery Process: Find out the effect for yourself on moving your body to extremes (ie. over and under rotating) to find new sensations and body awareness.

Weekend Practice

Group A: Work on both a) streamline without breathing motion to refine it and your body awareness and b) exhale + head turn while keeping form

Group B: Work on a) kicking on your back and b) the streamline drill on both right and left sides (if it feels harder, take time to set up properly before beginning the drill). Run through your mental checklist of streamline components.

Distances: no more than 5-10m for this drill. Rest often to ensure that your body posture has your full attention, not your urge to breathe!

Watch the Sensational Freestyle Rough Cut video to visualize the progression of skills you will be learning (among others). Think about how these drills will help you achieve comfort and efficiency. Bring any questions you have to class next week.
